Beginning the Bachata Journey

As a Bachata enthusiast and practitioner for almost 10 months, I’ve diligently practiced this dance art form twice a week in group lessons and danced for two hours at social parties. Engaging in shadow dancing and free improvisations at home, I have progressively embraced the beauty and complexity of Bachata.

Progress is a Process

Over the past months, my skill has developed significantly in several ways. I have improved my hand holding technique, avoiding the use of fingers to pinch or press. I’ve learned to prepare better with appropriate weight shifts, enhancing my effectiveness and grace in Sensual positions. Additionally, I’ve mastered the art of level and dynamic changes – learning to slow down or speed up as per the rhythm and flow of the music. Despite these improvements, the basic steps are still a work in progress, requiring consistent practice and dedication.

Popularity and Performance

Being popular with followers around my level is an affirmation of my growth as a dancer. Getting requested to film videos almost every night and having my dance clips appreciated is a bonus. However, I understand that advanced leads might often find my moves lacking in complexity. As the saying goes, you can’t make everyone happy!

Planning Ahead

My immediate goals include leading the Sensual parts better, improving body isolations, and continuing to enhance my basic steps. Sensual Bachata often feels like a different dance language, with followers often moving too fast and creating chaos that’s challenging for me to control. Over the next 2-3 months, I aim to start learning to be a follower as well. I truly believe this would not only be exciting but would also help me understand and empathize with the follower’s perspective better.

Learning from Feedback

I am grateful to my community of learners and teachers who have given me insightful feedback at every juncture of my learning journey. Their inputs have been instrumental in shaping my understanding, technique, and style.

Embrace the Journey

The journey of learning Bachata as a beginner lead is akin to a roller coaster ride. It’s a mix of exhilaration, sweat, footwork, rhythm, and connection. It’s about understanding your partner and moving in sync with their energy. It’s about expressing yourself and losing yourself to the rhythm of the music. It’s humbling, exciting, challenging, and rewarding all at once. In the end, it’s not how well you danced but how much you enjoyed every step along the way.
